Ken Larson started work on this model early in the production of the first season of the series. It was a low priority project so he worked on it off and on for a year. It started much smaller and grew over time but test shots showed that it would still require a matte painting for many moves. The decision was made for the second season that the time had come for Earth to explore space in a more Star Trek like feel and to leave Earth behind. Rumor was that John Matley, the new producer, was tired of seeing the same matte painting every week. The New Chicago model was no longer needed and was abandoned. |
